Have you ever looked at a LEGO brick and wondered how it was made? Or maybe you looked at the dashboard of a car and saw how perfectly the plastic parts fit together. These things are made using a special process called plastic injection molding.

To understand plastic injection molding, think about a waffle maker. When you make waffles, you pour liquid batter into a hot metal shape. You close the lid, wait a minute, and then pop out a perfect waffle. Plastic injection molding works just like that! Instead of batter, we use melted plastic. Instead of a waffle maker, we use a big, powerful machine and a metal box called a mold.
This process is how we make millions of things that look exactly the same. Whether it is a toy, a toothbrush, or a part for a big machine, plastic injection molding is the magic that makes it happen.
Section 1: Tiny Plastic Beads (Materials)
Everything made with plastic injection molding starts out very small. Plastic does not start as a big liquid puddle. It starts as tiny, hard beads. These beads are called pellets. They look a bit like tiny pieces of rice or round sprinkles.

Why use beads?Beads are easy to move and store. A factory can have big bags of these beads ready to go. There are many different kinds of plastic beads:
- Some make parts that are very hard, like a helmet.
- Some make parts that are soft and bendy, like a phone case.
- Some are clear like glass, like a plastic water bottle.
If a company wants a blue toy, they add blue beads to the mix. It is just like mixing colors in a paint set! Once the beads are mixed, they are ready to be turned into something amazing.
Section 2: The Magic Metal Box (The Mold)
The most important part of plastic injection molding is the mold. If the machine is the “chef,” then the mold is the “recipe.”

A mold is a heavy box made of very strong metal, like steel. Inside the box, a “cave” is carved out. This cave is the exact shape of the part you want to make. Engineers use computers to make sure the cave is perfect. If the cave is even a tiny bit wrong, the plastic part will not fit where it belongs.
At HST Technology, we are experts at making these metal boxes. We make sure the inside of the mold is smooth and the right size. Some molds can make one part at a time. Other molds are “family molds” that can make many different parts at the same time!
Section 3: How the Machine Works (Step-by-Step)
How does a tiny bead become a finished part? The plastic injection molding machine does all the hard work.

Here is how it happens, step by step:
- Feeding the Beads: The tiny plastic beads are poured into a big funnel at the top of the machine.
- Melting the Plastic: The beads fall into a long tube. Inside the tube, a big screw turns and pushes the beads forward. The tube is very hot! The heat and the turning screw melt the beads into a thick, gooey liquid. It looks like hot honey.
- The Big Squish (Injection): Once the plastic is melted, the machine pushes it very fast into the metal mold. This is called “injection.” The plastic fills every tiny corner of the metal cave.
- Cooling Down: The plastic is very hot, so it needs to get cold to become hard again. Water flows through the metal mold to cool it down quickly.
- The Pop Out: Once the plastic is hard, the metal mold opens up. Small pins push the plastic part out. Click! The part falls into a box, and the mold closes to start again.
This whole process can happen very fast. Some machines can make a new part every few seconds!
Section 4: What We Can Make
We use plastic injection molding to make almost everything around us. Because it is fast and makes perfect parts every time, many industries use it.

In Your CarLook around inside a car. The buttons for the radio, the handles for the doors, and the covers for the lights are all made this way. These parts must be very strong so they do not break when you use them every day.
In Your HomeMany things in your kitchen and living room come from a mold. This includes:
- The shells of your TV and computer.
- Plastic plates and cups.
- Large parts of your washing machine or fridge.
- Even some pieces of furniture!
In Factories (Industrial)Big machines need special plastic parts to work. We make things like insulators, which help keep electricity safe. These parts have to be made perfectly so that the machines do not break.
